The traineeship opportunities at the EU institutions constitute an interesting offer for the
citizens of its member states. The European Parliament (EP), as one of such institutions,
enables students and university graduates to attend a paid translation traineeship, during
which they may develop their professional skills and familiarise themselves with the
functioning of EU institutions. The citizens of Poland attend a traineeship at the Polish
Translation Unit, which is one of the 23 language units that belong to the EP’s Directorate
for Translation. The article aims to present its traineeship programme, designed to deepen
the participants’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired during the course of
higher education, and to encourage novice translators to apply for traineeships within
the EU institutions. The author of the present article, who himself completed a threemonth-
long traineeship at the Polish Translation Unit of the European Parliament at
the beginning of 2016, believes that paid translation traineeships provide an excellent
opportunity to broaden one’s knowledge and sharpen one’s skills with regard to translating.
The information provided in the article is valid as of the end of March 2016.
