Anna Nowakowska-Głuszak

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to address the problem of translating dates from Spanish into
Polish, in particular the problem of applying foreign spelling rules to target text equivalents.
The author begins by explaining the importance of the concept of time and the way
dates are presented in documents. Then she reviews the literature for guidelines concerning
translating this kind of data. Subsequently, the author discusses the methods of recording
dates in both Spanish and Polish, while emphasizing the differences between them; she
also presents the Polish and Spanish inflection rules that apply to dates and points to the
related and most frequent translation errors. Finally, the author emphasizes the translators’
role in preserving the accuracy of their mother tongue.
