How to translate selected terms from the field of Polish administrative procedure into German?

Róża Zielnik-Kołodzińska

Abstract

The article deals with the translation of certain terms from the field of Polish administrative procedure into German. First, the author traces the history of the Polish Code of Administrative Procedure, pointing out that the Polish lawmakers modelled it on the Austrian Administrative Procedure Code (Allgemeines Verwaltungsverfahrensgesetz). Later on, the author claims that due to Poland’s far more intensive trade with Germany than with Austria, and the consequently greater need to use German spoken in Germany, administrative procedure terms should be translated into the German language variant. In the second part of the article the author discusses selected Polish administrative procedure terms and explains why they are difficult to translate into German. Special attention is paid to the incompatibility of the Polish and German legal system and the need to conduct comparative law studies in order to find the most adequate counterparts.
