Translation of Polish names of legislative acts into French

Eryk Stachurski

Abstract

For the translator, translating a legal text means confronting with a discourse containing a number of hidden difficulties, which are of cultural and technical nature. The titles of acts seem a perfect example of this situation since they condense elements of all types of these difficulties into a formula sanctioned by legal usage. Comparative jurilinguistics, supported by the internet, is today able to solve most of the difficulties that the translator encounters. It makes it possible to take into account the hierarchy of norms of the source text, the principles of legalism and the legal uses of the target language. Thus, on the basis of official parallel websites, corpus analyses or statistics the translator can adopt an appropriate translation strategy.
