Status of Translation Theory and Practice in the Professional Translator’s Training from the Polish Historical Perspective

Danuta Kierzkowska

Abstract

Discussing copyright law, the history of translation studies and Polish applied linguistics,
the author claims that the deep-seated, unfavourable views on translators and their work
have affected their social status as well as the academic approach to applied linguistics as
an independent field of science, one that is still underestimated in the context of today’s
Polish formula of philology and modern schools of translation. On the background of
successful cooperation between Polish universities and practising translators in the last
twenty years, the author describes the present role of practitioners in teaching the profession
and shows her recognition for the new academic approach to these professionals.
